Good Will Hunting Movie Review - Starring Matt Damon and Robin Williams

By David Terr

"Good Will Hunting" is a thought-provoking drama about an abused orphan genius who works at a janitor at MIT, wasting his talent in order to avoid dealing with pain. Matt Damon does a superb acting job as Will Hunting, the genius, as does Robin Williams as his psychiatrist.

Will Hunting (Damon), works as a janitor at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There he anonymously solves a term challenge problem posed by a math professor, Lambeau. The professor urges the mysterious solver to come forth, but no one does. The professor then poses a more difficult problem in order to try to catch the unknown solver. He then discovers Will working on the problem and is astonished to learn that he came up with the correct solution.

Later, Will gets arrested for fighting a man who'd beaten him up in kindergarten. Prof. Lambeau agrees to place Will under his custody in exchange for math lessons and a promise to get psychiatric treatment. Will solves all the problems without any trouble but ends up alienating every psychiatrist he visits. Eventually Prof Lambeau takes him to his friend Dr. Sean Maguire (Williams). Will nearly drives him away as well, but Sean decides to treat him in any case.

Eventually Sean begins to get through to Will, convincing him to let down his guard. By the end of the film, Will decides to quit his janitorial work and move to California to pursue a better life as well as Skylar, a woman he'd previously met and who'd fallen in love with him but whom he'd parted with on bad terms.
