Guess Who's Coming to Dinner Movie Review - Starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy

By David Terr

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is a very entertaining and socially relevant film regarding a mixed marriage. Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy do superb acting jobs as the parents of a white girl (Houghton) who falls in love and plans to marry a black man (Poitier). The rest of the acting is also very good and the story is quite moving.

The movie begins with Joanna Drayton (Houghton) and Dr. Prentice (Poitier) returning from Hawaii to San Francisco. They share a cab and return to Joanna's parents house, where she introduces Dr. Prentice to them as well as their maid Tilly, who is enraged. She tells her parents that she's planning on marrying Dr. Prentice. At first they're rather upset but Mrs. Drayton (Hepburn) soon approves of the marriage, being happy for her daughter. Mr. Drayton (Houghton) has a much harder time coming around, however. Although he is very liberal in his views, he has a hard time accepting the marriage. To make matters more difficult for him, Dr. Prentice tells him that he won't marry Joanna without his approval.

Later that afternoon, Dr. Prentice's parents arrive. His father becomes very upset with him, but he has a talk with his father in which he stands up for himself. His mother, however, is much happier about the proposed marriage. She talks to Mr. Drayton and helps to turn him around by telling him that as men get old, they seem to forget what it's like to be in love. Eventually he comes around to seeing things her way and approves the marriage. The two families then enjoy a nice dinner.
