What is the premise of Hairspray?

Tracy Turnbland is an overweight high schooler who is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. She lives in Baltimore and everyday, she and her best friend Penny Pingleton run home to watch the show. One day a star on the Corny Collins Show abruptly leaves the show opening up a spot for hopeful dancers to audition for. Tracy and Penny jump on the opportunity to audition for the show. When Tracy makes it on the show, she angers her mother who didn't even like her watching the show to begin with. She also angers dancing queen Amber Von Tussle who plots to end Tracy's career. During this Tracy fights to get integration of black and white dancers on the show.
