"Spaceballs" is a hilarious sci-fi comedy starring, written and directed by Mel Brooks. The movie is a spoof of many sci-fi films and shows, most notably the Star Wars saga. Rick Moranis is a riot as Dark Helmet, a parody of Darth Vader, as is John Candy as Barf, a "mawg" (half man, half dog) and Dom DeLuise as Pizza the Hutt, a takeoff of Jabba the Hutt.
The Spaceballs are an evil and inept race who have carelessly used up most of their air, due to the carelessness of President Skroob (Brooks). In order to obtain a new supply of air, they decide to kidnap Princess Vespa of the planet Druidia.
Princess Vespa is set to marry Prince Valium, a loser who sleeps all the time. Vespa doesn't love Valium but she has to marry him because he's the only prince left in the galaxy. She runs out of her wedding, followed by her robot maid Dot Matrix (voice of Joan Rivers). The two escape in Vespa's father's Mercedes spaceship.
Meanwhile, Lone Starr, a daring young pilot, is out riding his spaceship Winnebago along with his sidekick mawg Barf (Candy). He needs to pay Pizza the Hutt a million spacebucks in order to live. He encounters the Spaceballs' humungous starship but is able to pass them by by "jamming" their radar (with a huge jar of jam). Later he gets a message from Vespa's father, urging him to pick up Vespa and deliver her back to Druidia. He does so, but finds her very spoiled and difficult to deal with.
In order to avoid capture by the Spaceballs, Lone Starr lands on a desert planet. After the crew nearly dies of thirst, they are rescued by some odd creatures and taken to the hideout of Yogurt (also played by Brooks), keeper of the most awesome power in the universe, the Schwartz. He hands Lone Star a Schwartz ring with which to use the Schwartz as well as a fortune cookie.
The spaceballs manage to track down Lone Starr and his gang. Dark Helmet manages to capture the princess with his use of the Schwartz. Dark Helmet blackmails Vespa's father into revealing the combination to the lock on the atmosphere of Druidia by threatening to give Vespa back her old crooked nose. He then converts his spaceship into Megamaid, a giant maid with a vacuum cleaner in order to get the air out. Lone Starr is able to stop him with his Schwartz ring, reversing the vacuum cleaner setting from suck to blow and reviving the atmosphere.
Lone Starr is able to sneak his Winnebago into Megamaid, where he battles it out with Dark Helmet. Neither man is defeated, but Lone Star then sets off the self-destruct sequence of Megamaid. Everyone on board manages to evacuate except for President Skroob and Dark Helmet. Megamaid blows up, but the two survive inside her head, which lands on the Planet of the Apes.
Lone Starr and Barf manage to avoid having to pay off Pizza the Hutt because of his accidental death. He then refuses the million spacebucks reward which Vespa's father offers him. Once Vespa learns of this, she realizes that Lone Starr loves her. Lone Starr cracks open the fortune cookie which Yogurt had given him. A ghostlike image of Yogurt appears, telling Lone Starr that he's a genuine prince. Lone Starr then decides to go after Vespa, rescuing her at the last minute from marrying Prince Valium and marrying her himself.
