Bird Feed and Feeders

Feeding birds is a great way to have an opportunity to attract and observe these creatures. First of all, you should have a birdbath along with any type of bird feeder. This way the birds do not have to go somewhere else for an after dinner drink of water.

No matter the season, you should keep bird baths filled with fresh water to encourage visiting birds and provide them with fresh water. Also, it’s a good idea to replace the water in your bird bath every day so that water does not become stagnant. Stagnant water is the perfect place for mosquitoes to breed. It only takes a few days build up of standing water to produce a horde of mosquitoes and days worth of annoyance and discomfort.

If you own specialty bird feeders such as hummingbird feeders, you should take them inside during the winter months, as these types of birds will not visit cold areas during these months. Though some seasons and in some locations these birds migrate east or west instead of south, it is unlikely and the possibility of your bird feeder getting damaged by freezing water is probably not worth the risk. Take this time as an opportunity to clean the feeders and perform any type of necessary repairs.

When it comes to types of bird feeders and bird feed it really depends on the type of bird or birds that you wish to attract. First, you should find out which species of birds are native to your particular location. You can find out this type of information easily on the internet.

Many informational bird websites will also provide various information about the type of feed and feeders that certain bird species are attracted to. This is a convenient way to do some research on bird feed and birdfeeders before going out to purchase these types of items.

Though there are some types of birds that prefer specific types of feed, when it doubt it is always an option to opt for one of the general bird feed types. Be wary of bird feed varieties that are filled mostly with millet, as these little pieces of feed are eaten by the birds but are not preferred or particularly nutritious.

When choosing a general bird feed mix, try to choose a feed that has a variety of types of feed as well as some larger pieces. Usually the optimal type of general bird feed will not be the most inexpensive brand, but if you do a little research or label reading you should be able to find a quality feed for not much more than the millet heavy feeds.

It is a good idea to keep bird feeders filled. Once birds discover your feeder, they will begin to make it a stop on their regular rounds. Soon bird word will travel and even more birds will begin to appear at your feeder. A interruption in feed availability will general result in disrupted patterns of the number of birds visiting your yard. For this reason many bird lovers opt to have more than one feeder to ensure that feed is always available.
