As Microsoft plans to make its move into the search engine business, Google is decided not too loose its advantage.
Google announced four new search tools: Google Co-Op, Google Desktop 4, Google Notebook and Google Trends. The first three add new capabilities which include facilitating two-way exchanges and will also be able to rely on user expertise to improve search optimization. Google Trends, on the other hand, allows a deep analysis of searches made over time in order to better understand search patterns.
With the Co-op beta community, anyone can now label their web pages related to their area of expertise or create specific links to which users can subscribe. Once subscribed, all links and labels will be added to the users search results. This way, Google can connect users to the most relevant links according to their search queries. Googles first steps have been to include restaurants and movie information through partner web pages. The community can now start building new topics that will connect them to specific information of their interest.
Google Desktop 4 beta allows personalized desktops through Google Gadgets. These gadgets are applications that allow the delivery of personalized information according to the users interests. Google is thus looking to expand its search experience to desktops and not only within the search engine. Additionally, developers can now also create and share their own gadgets with other users.
Google Trends is a useful tool for anyone interested in understanding Google users search popularity. Through it, we can learn what terms have been most popular over time and compare search criteria. On most results, relevant links are added to news related to the search query. Undoubtably, it will become one of the most powerful tools for improving online marketing.
Last, but not least, Google Notebook allows users to clip text, images, and links from the sites they are browsing to an online notebook. The notebook is then accessible from any computer and can also be shared. With this, Google shifts its attention to social search, as Yahoo had been doing for some time, and shows that this trend has established its place firmly in the online community.
