Mirrors are everywhere! When you visit a hotel, enter a public washroom, a change room how often do you recall seeing mirrors on the wall? But the question is, is it a real mirror? Here's how to detect a two way mirror.

A two way mirror is a mirror where you can be watched from the other side. You've heard on the news several times over the years where someone has installed a 2 way mirror in a female change room. It can be a little tricky to identify these mirrors by just looking at them so here's some tips to help you tell.

The most common way is to do this simple test. You need to put the tip of your fingernail on the reflective surface. If there is a gap between the image of the nail and your fingernail then it's a real mirror. If you fingernail touches the image of your nail then there is a good chance it's a two way.

2 way mirrors let light through in both directions so another test you can do is to hold it up to a light. If you can see through it you've got a two way.

When researchers view with these mirrors they are in a darker room looking into a well lit room. The mirror looks normal and their viewing is crystal clear because of the light arrangement. This is what makes it so effective for the observers.

There is no question there are some very valuable uses for two way mirrors. Police detectives use them frequently. They are useful in hospital wards, and perhaps even in nurseries to name just a few places. And they are used by those filming movies and television

But employers are also starting to use it to track or spy on employees. This is not a good use. In fact it is a violation of ones personal rights. Although this doesn't seem to be stopping those set on using this technology.

So the next time you enter a public washroom or a hotel and you spot a mirror you might have second thoughts about whether it really is a mirror or whether it is a two way mirror. Just remember the simple test above and if you find you are the victim of viewing then take action and report it to the authorities.
