Tarzan Tickets – A Timeless Tale Of The King Of The Apes

By: Al Terry

Tarzan is a famous and well-loved character who is known by almost all children and adults. Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote the story of Tarzan in 1912. Since then the character of Tarzan has been immortalized in radio programs, cartoons for children on television and movies. And since May 10, 2006, there is also a Broadway production which tells the story of Tarzan.

The theatrical presentation of Tarzan has been mainly influenced by the recent Disney film that showed how Tarzan started his life in a jungle. It starts of with Tarzan the infant being saved from a burning ship along with his parents. They are stranded on the coast of Africa, where they begin to live a simple life. Tragically, Sabor, a leopard, kills his parents. Hearing the baby’s cries, an ape whose child was also killed by Sabor, comes and finds Tarzan and eventually takes him to her home and brings him up as her own child.

Being brought up in the company of apes, Tarzan becomes like them and thinks he is an ape like them. He lives a happy and carefree life until one day, a group of English explorers come to the jungle. He is an adult now and he is shocked to realize that he is not an ape after all but a human being like the explorers. Thereafter follows the many emotional upheavals he goes through, coming to terms with his newfound identity and meeting Jane who makes him feel many unknown emotions.

The script of the theatrical adaptation was written by David Henry Hwang and was first staged at the Richard Rodgers Theatre where it enjoyed tremendous success. The music for the play, and incidentally also for the film, was written by Phil Collins, who is a multiple Grammy winner.

The story of the play revolves around Tarzan, and how he interacts with both animals and humans in his life. As the play unfolds, you see how he lives as an ape and is friends with most of the jungle animals. The drama begins when the humans come to the jungle and cause turmoil in his life. You feel his sadness, his anger, his bewilderment and his fears. Considering most of the characters are animals, the play manages to display a range of human emotions like love, anger, sorrow, confusion and happiness. It is perhaps this feature of the play that has made it a huge success.

Most of you know the story of Tarzan inside out. You have read the books and watched the film. But watching the story unfold on stage is another experience altogether. You are completely engrossed as you watch Tarzan deal with all the situations in his life.

To make sure you do not miss the opportunity of watching the Broadway production of this timeless classic, you should get your tickets as soon as ticket sales begin. The play is so successful that shows are sold out very quickly. You could contact the box office or buy your tickets online.
