Understanding Floods and the Danger They Pose

Flooding is a dangerous event that can not only cause damage, but death. The majority of floods come with at least a small amount of warning. A flash flood is the most deadly type of flooding around. Flash flooding can occur if a levee or dam system breaks or it can be due to a large amount of rain in a small amount of time. Many meteorologists are able to determine if and where their may be a flash flood risk; however, residents can become stranded or placed in danger in a matter of minutes.

River or stream flooding usually occurs when a large amount of rain falls or even when a large amount of snow quickly melts. Residents are often given notice when a river or stream begins to flood; however, damage can still occur to a large number of homes in the area.

One of the most common mistakes made during a flood is when individuals try and evacuate too late. One of the most dangerous places to be during a flood is in a vehicle. A flash flood can actually carry a vehicle away. Flash floods and traditional flooding many also cause roadways to deteriorate or completely give away.

Since a large number of individuals are given a some type of warning that a flood may occur there are a number of steps that an individual or family should take to ensure the safety of themselves, their pets, and their home. Families who live in an area that may be prone to multiple floods a year are encouraged to develop a flood safety plan and regularly practice it.

The most accurate way to learn about the risk of a flood is by listening to the television, radio, or a weather radio system. Homeowners or renters that are at risk for experiencing a flood should prepare extra drinking water. Often times when a flood occurs water systems become disturbed and some water becomes undrinkable for a period of time.

Homeowners may also wish to move their valuable possessions out of the basement or off the ground floor of a home. Individuals who have flood insurance may be able to be reimbursed for their lost or damaged belongings; however, it may be better to be safe than sorry. Homes that regularly experience basement flooding may want to considering purchasing a water pump and use it to begin pumping water out of a home as soon as flooding begins.

A flood is a part of nature that cannot always be prevented. Individuals who live in an area that is subject to a large amount of flooding are encouraged to purchase flood insurance on their homes and develop a flood safely plan with their families. Regardless of where a family lives everyone all around the world should know what to do and how to prepare for a flood.
