What Were Your Favorite Cartoons?

There is no question that the cartoons of today are enjoyed by youngsters but the cartoons of the past are truly classics. We’ll likely not see anything like them again. So what were your favorite cartoons?

How about Tom and Jerry which hit the airwaves back in 1940? This is a cartoon about a mouse named Jerry and a cat name Tom. Jerry spends his time tormenting Tom while Tom tries hard to catch Jerry but always seems to get himself into a heap of trouble. Tom and Jerry filmed there last episode in 1957 but continued to air for years and can still be found on some channels.

Remember the Walt Disney’s Donald Duck? He made his debuted back in 1934 in “The Wise Little Hen.” His fiery temper combined with that crazy voice had audiences hooked in no time. There were 128 Donald Duck cartoons as well as the performances in other cartoons like Mickey Mouse.

Donald Duck was a kind hearted sole with the best of intentions although it usually took him a few times to come up with those great intentions. In the mean time he always seemed to be heading in the wrong direction. And this hot headed Duck could have you in stitches. And then there were his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Donald Duck broke out of TV and hit the big screen and comic books too.

“Ha-ha-ha-HA-ha” – Recognize it? Why Woody Woodpecker of course characterized by his staccato laugh. Woody Woodpecker debuted on television in 1957 and ran to 1958. Then after an extended vacation Woody got a makeover and hit the screen again in 1979 produced by Fox. And in 1999 a new hip Wood was introduced so the kids of today can learn to love him just like we did!

“Meet the Flintstones and have a yaba daba doo time!” Are you a Flintstones fan? Originally airing in 1960 it was so popular it ran through until 1966 with 166 original episodes aired. It actually wasn’t until the 3rd season that the “Meet Flintstones” theme was incorporated and it was the first animated production to air on television.

Fred and Barney, Wilma and Betty, Dino, Bam bam, and Pebbles two families living in prehistoric Bedrock but facing the problems of a modern world. It was strategically designed as a family cartoon and even after its last new episode in 1966 it continued to run. In fact you can find re-runs on air today.

Now I’m sure everyone loved Yogi Bear – after all he was smarter than the average bear. Yogi Bear was one of the most popular television cartoons of its time. Yogi was the sarcastic rule breaking bear that lived in Jellystone National Park and there also lived his little bear friend Boo Boo. Yogi was constantly being commended on being smarter than the average bear and he was always butting heads with the warden. It was hilarious!

Scooby Doo seams to be the cartoon that’s going to connect the generations. The original Scooby gang included Velma, Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, and of course Scooby and there were the scary villains and the ghosts. Scooby Doo Where Are You was incredibly unique taking criminals and scary situations and making them laughable.

Originally hitting the airwaves back in 1969 and it ran through to 1976. Since then there have been several rewrites as Scooby Doo continues to re-invent himself, or at least the producers do. The grand finally appears to be the Scooby Doo movie. It’s great to see this character have such a long life and the new Scooby Doo is certainly not like the original but in our changing world it’s rather fitting.

There were so many great cartoons that aired. Choosing a favorite cartoon from your childhood can be pretty difficult but we all had our favorite. So what were your favorite cartoons?
