Cable or Satellite - Which Is The Better Choice?

By: Galen Randel

For ten years I was a very unhappy cable TV customer. Despite the promise of great picture quality, I was never impressed with the reception I was receiving. Complaining to the cable television company never did any good. I was always told that everything was working just fine.

I'm not sure weather it was the poor reception or the price hikes that were responsible for most of my grief during the time I was a cable television customer. I experienced many more price increases with cable TV than I have with satellite TV service.

I'm sure cable television has changed a lot since I was a customer about 9 years ago. Digital cable now provides a better quality picture and "on demand" service provides greater programming choices. One thing that has not changed is the frequent price increases. I know that because I still rely on service from the local cable television company for my high-speed Internet service since it is the only high-speed service available in this area.

When we moved to a new house almost ten years ago, I decided the time was right to try out satellite television and see if it was superior to cable. I decided to go with Dish Network since I preferred their programming options over the other satellite service that was available at the time.

My Dish Network service has been outstanding for the last nine years. I remain a very happy Dish Network customer and can report that I have had to deal with very few problems since I have had it. I experienced many more problems and outages with cable than I have with Dish Network.

One of the claims that the cable television companies like to make is that satellite TV is frequently disrupted by the weather. Well, as a long-time satellite television customer, I can tell you that they are greatly exaggerating that problem. I have experienced very few weather-related disruptions, which only happen with extremely heavy rain. I suffered through a lot more "down time" with cable than I ever have with satellite TV.

Even though the cable companies like to say that satellite TV is subject to a lot of weather-related outages, it's actually the opposite that is true. I was a cable customer long enough to see my share of outages when a traffic accident knocked a pole down or a bad storm caused a tree to fall on the wires and bring them down.

If you compare Dish Network to cable television on the basis of reliability, I would vote for Dish Network without hesitation. Beyond the rare weather-related outage on Dish Network, all you normally have to worry about is whether or not you have electrical power. Since you receive the signal directly from the satellite, you do not have to rely on wires that might be brought down in a storm. As long as you have power, you can watch TV. Heck, even if you don't have power and you do have your own generator, you can watch satellite TV even when the lines are down!
