After a strong 2005 finish at the box office it might be difficult to visualize an even better 2006 season. But there’s some great movies just waiting to hit the weekend box office so keep your eyes open for important release dates and some promising movies.
2005 went out with a band with “King Kong” holding top spot for two weeks then dropping to second place with the release of “The Chronicles of Narnia.” No surprise as this was a movie that has a huge following based on the old story line and its successful release had been anticipated. In fact it took in $225M on the initial weekend release so you can expect to see the rest of the Narnia books in a theater near you soon!
“Fun with Duck and Jane” remained in third place grossing $64M in its first 10 days and “Rumor Has It” jumped to 5th place and grossed more than $11M in 4 days.
The 2005 box office went out with a bit of a bang and now we must patiently wait to see what 2006 will offer for the weekend box office and from the rumblings we could see an even better season so watch out for these important dates. Here are our picks for the 2006 season.
February 3rd “The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford,” hits the box office. This Warner Bros. movie tells the story of how Robert Ford joins forces with killer Jesse James. Jesse James is played by Brad Pitt. Now gals what more could we ask for? Casey Affleck co-stars beside Pitt as Robert Ford, so there’s definitely some talent in this film.
February 3rd also sees “Bandidas” hit the box office. Set in Mexico at the turn of the century, two very different women become a bank-robbing duo in an effort to combat a ruthless enforcer terrorizing their town. Starring “So hot” Penelope Cruz as Maria, Salma Hayek as Sara and Steve Zahn as Quentin Cooke. Besides the beautiful women the story line is good and worth watching.
The Da Vinci Code is scheduled to hit the box office on May 19th and it is with much anticipation. This is a Tom Hanks and Ron Howard film about a mysterious murder in the Lourve that leads to clues in Da Vinci paintings and religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years resulting in a web of controversy within the Catholic Church and shaking the foundation of Christianity. Starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, and Audrey Tautou as Sophie Neveu. The Release date on this movie as changed quite a few times so it is subject to change again.
June 9th sees “Cars” at the weekend box office. Cars is the saga of a hot-shot animated stock-car name Lightning McQueen, voiced by actor Owen Wilson. McQueen is on its way to a big race when the cocky car gets waylaid in Radiator Springs. Here McQueen finds the true meaning of friendship and family. Although the story line seems a bit cheesy Pixar has never disappointed us in the past so we’re going to give it the thumbs up.
July 21st see “Lady In The Water” hit the box office. The story line is original and rather intriguing and can only be classed as a mixed drama/fantasy/thriller an unusual combination. The apartment complex superintendent finds a nymph like creature living in the pool that he maintains that is trying to find her way back to her world. He works with his tenants to protect his new friend from the creatures that are determined to keep her in our world.
November 17th see “Casino Royale” at the box office. For you James Bond fans this is a must see. Based on a novel this might be the first Bond movie where Bond kicks butt without any fancy gadgets. This is one of those old fashioned Bond movies with fists and the occasional meat clever. Finally the fluff is gone and we see James Bond as a true hero without the gimmicks!
That’s only a few of the hits that we will see hitting the weekend box office this year so be sure to keep an eye online for important dates for upcoming releases. It’s promising to be a great season at the box office!
