Cast Away, Movie Review
By: Vytas Gaizutis
Cast Away is a very realistic and compelling tale of Chuck Noland, a Fed Ex executive, played by Tom Hanks, with a Type A personality, who is subjected to events beyond his control. For individuals exhibiting Type “A” behavior, it is all about control. He spends his time globetrotting to international Fed Ex offices monitoring productivity and efficiency of shipping practices. When Chuck finally realizes that he can no longer control his environment as the only survivor of a Fed Ex plane crash on a deserted island in the Pacific, we see the slow unraveling of a person’s life. His priorities have changed. Now there’s only surviving and escaping the island. It is very moving to watch this high-powered man come to terms with his search for meaning as his personal philosophy evolves during his ordeal.
The crash sequences catapult and mesmerize the audience as you experience Chuck’s riveting encounter with his mortality. Many movies have depicted a similar scenario, but the filmmaking coupled with Tom Hanks performance makes this a scene you will never forget. As an actor, Tom had to endure some real physical challenges including losing about 100 pounds during the making of this film. Every actor has at least one movie that was cast for him. Tom was born to play Chuck Nolan. All the supporting actors, including Helen Hunt, provide fine performances but it is Chuck’s story. We learn the joys, the pain, the sorrows, and everything in-between. One of the most endearing scenes is the relationship Chuck forms with a humanized volleyball named Wilson.
In every life, there comes a fork in the road. Whatever path we take will impact our future destiny. This is a very powerful movie that will find you wondering about the possibilities you might have experienced if you had navigated a different journey.
