Fur, especially beaver fur, was the money crop of New France (Quebec). Frenchmen traveled throughout the Great Lakes, down major river systems and as far west as the Rockies in search of new sources of fur. The French-Canadians did not trap or prepare the furs, the Native Americans did. The Frenchmen lived with the Indian tribes, gaining their friendship.
