Digital TV - What is the Entire Buzz About?

By Jayson Pablo

Human beings had been foraging from time immemorial and devising tools for communicating with the mass. Perhaps television was one of the greatest inventions which brought about great renaissance to the world of mass communication. And the march is continuing –language, pictures and other essential communication tools.

All the communication devices succeeded in perfectly portraying ideas and thoughts among a small community initially, and then they slowly started assimilating the whole world. Finally a time came, when television became the most effective communication sharing medium. However, technology is in a constant progress and in a digital era, television is also undergoing great changes and with more and more innovations, it also has made their entry into the digital world.

Now what is this digital television (DTV)? Of course it is predictable that it must be an advanced version. Digital television encompasses High-definition Television and several other applications, such as datacasting, multicasting, Standard Definition Television, and interactivity. Digital television is just a step ahead in the long run of giving television viewing a different experience. Digital television enables broadcasters to offer television with movie-quality picture and superior quality sound.

Unlike analog televisions, in the digital television, digital signals are used for broadcasting. Digital television is nothing but a system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures and sound with the help of digital signals. The digital modulation data used by the digital tv is digitally compressed which is decoded by a specially designed television set or a PC fitted with a television card. Often a standard receiver with a set-top box is also used for decoding digital modulation data.

Though the digital television technology was introduced only some decades back, this technology greatly influenced the broadcasting and consumer electronics industries, and showed unlimited opportunities of better economic possibilities. The iconic popularity of digital television is quite evident from the fact that almost all TV stations throughout the world, especially in the United States are airing digital television programming, and even some of the broadcasting commissions are strictly suggesting that the manufacturers should include digital tuners in their future television sets.
