Choose From Several Types Of Home Designs

If you are planning to build a new home you’ll have many different floor plans and home styles to choose from. The home design you choose to build will depend a great deal on what you needs are. You can choose from several types of home designs.

Different plans have different costs associated with them, but the most important element is to choose a floor plan that you are comfortable with and that will meet your needs as well as your budget. Here are some examples of a few different designs that are available.

One story homes have all the amenities on one floor including sleeping. This design is ideal for anyone who is unable to climb stairs or simply does not want to.

A one story home can cost more to cool and heat because there is more exterior surfaces than on a 2 story. The roof on a 1 story is usually twice as large as a 2 story room for a home of equivalent square footage. One other disadvantage is the bedrooms may have less privacy then in other designs because baths and bedrooms run along one hall.

A Two story home can cost less to build overall and the heating and cooling costs are also usually less. There is also a lot more design variations available in a two story. Things such as lofts, large bay windows, fancy staircases, and vaulted ceilings are all an option with a 2 story design. Two story homes have a smaller footprint so they are easily constructed on a much smaller lot than a 1 story.

Another great feature of a two story is the separation of sleep areas and living areas. Bedrooms are generally on the upper floor with the main floor being dedicated to living space. This makes the bedrooms much more private and a lot quieter for small children.

One disadvantage if you live in a hotter climate it can be more difficult to keep a 2 story cool and maintain a comfortable temperature on both floors. You’ll want to consider installing central air as the upper floor will always be warmer because heat rises.

Three story designs are similar to a 2 story design as far as roof pitch, attic, and design options. A 3 story home is basically a 2 story house with a finished basement. Like their 2 story counterpart they can be built on a smaller lot and they tend to cost less to heat and cool.

Three story homes will often have bedrooms on the upstairs floor as well as in the basement which also often has a rec or family room. The finished basement area is often popular with families that have teenagers as it gives them a little bit of space and privacy while still under their parent’s watchful eye.

Multi level house designs have floors on different levels. They are often referred to as bi-levels, split-levels, or quad-levels depending on how many splits they have. These are rather a unique design with many short stair runs and the ability to easily accommodate privacy with the bedrooms.

Multi level designs are often used on sloped lots where it is difficult or impossible to build a two story. This design allows the builder to use otherwise difficult small parcels of land to build unique style homes.

Because the floor plans on a multi-level designs is more open heating and cooling costs may be higher. There is also a tendency for noise to travel more easily from one area to the next.

The usually cost less to build then a two story home because part of the living area is in the basement. They can usually be accommodated on small unusual shaped lots and they have much to offer aesthetically.

Your lifestyle and family size will play an integral role in the home design you choose. Besides the type of home you can also choose from several different designs ranging from contemporary, Southwestern, Victorian, vacation, and country designs.
