Drumheller the land of the dinosaur. As you drive across the rolling farmland you suddenly come upon a twisting canyon that’s made up of layers of colored coal, sandstone, mudstone, and shale. These rock layers date back to the Cretaceous Period. The Drumheller Badlands is unique in that it is one of the few areas where the layers from earlier periods have naturally worn away exposing an abundance of fossils and complete dinosaur skeletons.
You can spend some time digging for your own fossils and exploring the area. Just watch for the occasional pesky rattlesnake! You also need to explore the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology. It’s absolutely spectacular and you could quite literally spend days here! It’s not just a museum it is a research center that’s used by scientists from around the world. It’s hi tech facilities have earned world recognition. Take in the amphitheatre which will take you through the time periods for the dinosaurs of the past to the current Badlands. And don’t forget to enjoy some of the theatre and arts available in the area.
As you drive through the streets you’ll notice dinosaur models greeting you on every corner. There’s even the Dalmatian dinosaur that protects the local fire hall. There’s plenty of shopping and lots of galleries and rock hound shops to explore. You can even take home some dinosaur fossil souvenirs. Beats the heck out of that t-shirt! The Drumheller Badlands are one of those places you could spend months and not get tired of the exploration opportunities it has to offer.
Medicine Hat is a vibrant modern city with a foundation rich in history. and home to the world tallest tee-pee which is open to visitors all year round. Be sure to check out some of the wonderful old architecture that can be found in this bustling downtown core and why not check out the longest suspension bridge in Canada. There’s a trip to remember!
