International News

The news media is a term that is used to describe mass media that focus on the news of a given people and area. These can include print media such as newspapers and magazines, broadcast media such as television stations, television networks, and radio stations, as well as internet-based media pages.

Usually the term news media includes any working journalists and is oftentimes used by those who would make generalizations about the work of ‘most’ journalists, such as journalists that work for large media corporations or who are based in Washington, D.C., or New York City or harbor a particularly conservative or liberal bias.

Though you may hear the phrase ‘the liberal media’ passed around in the U.S., the truth is that they have one of the most commercial and corporate-interest driven media systems in the world. Local news in the U.S. is generally prepackaged drivel that has been put together by media agencies that push this or that corporate agenda. Then these pretty little articles devoid of meaning are sold to affiliate stations across the nation.

Interestingly, to get any kind of real news about the United States, one would usually do better to watch the international news segments from a European country like Germany. Many news agencies around the globe have much more informative news programs and networks than those in place in the United States.

It’s no mystery why U.S. mass media is so terrible. This wasn’t always the case. It used to be that journalism stood as a symbol of those that stood up for the rights of others and the rights of the people to know what is going on around them. Those people and kinds of journalists haven’t gone away, they were just replaced with corporate sponsored news programs that don’t care about informing the people about anything more than where to spend their money and, to spend more of it.

Pacifica has come along fine in the information age and has extended it’s public access realm into television. Free Speech TV is a channel on the Dish Network satellite television network that features many important news programs and series. This channel also has many culturally and environmentally informative programs.

There are a growing number of channels such as this that are making a huge effort in dealing with the concerns and issues of people and not the corporations. People tend to feel isolated when the same consumer oriented drivel is shoved down their throats day in and day out. Turn off the TV or at least turn your mind onto something that is more productive than rerun commercials.

Many people do not have access to satellite television, ad so the internet is a great way to access international news and to step outside of the box of local news and the other types of media that the average American has access to in a typical day.

Also, the major independent media stations have their own websites where you can find out more about their sources as well as more about the subjects of their editorial pieces. Free speech TV, LINK TV and others have wonderful websites with full access to all types of media. There are also invaluable link sections with access to wonderful organizations like Amnesty International and Witness websites where you can learn more about situations that could really use your effort and support.
