When we hear the word educators we tend to think of teachers, professors, and individuals within the realm of formal education. But in reality we are all educators.
The definition of an educator is someone who teaches others by passing on skills or knowledge. Don’t we all do this to some degree every day of our lives? Some perhaps more than others.
When you show a child how to tie their shoes or learn the alphabet. When you show a new co-worker the ropes of your office. When you take the time to help a friend finish a project you are skilled at. Each time we do these things we are putting on our educators hat.
Perhaps the world would be a much better place if we did this more often. Think about the benefits that we all could reap if everyone was more willing to be an educator.
Now you might be thinking I don’t know much about anything, how could I ever be an educator? And that’s where you are absolutely wrong!
Think about it. Are you a good cook? Do you have a favorite recipe that everyone’s always complimenting you on? Do you know how to knit or sew? Perhaps you have carpentry skills or you are great at doing restoration work on a vehicle. Those are all skills that you could share just by putting on your educator hat.
Each and every one of us has skills that others could benefit from. Sometimes we just forget that they are actually skills. If you dedicated only one hour a week to educating someone you would contribute 52 hours a year to education. If every man woman and child dedicated 52 hours a year the amount of free education floating around the country would be astronomical.
Each time we turn on the television we experience an educational lesson. Even non documentary television has educational value. Perhaps you just watched the newest ER and discovered how to stop a child from choking, or maybe you just finished watching Jerry Springer and you’ve just learned how ridiculous some peoples lives are. It doesn’t matter what you’ve just watched there’s an education level even if the lesson is as simple as never watch that dumb show again.
Life is an education. From the day we are born until the day we die if we allow ourselves the opportunity each and every day will be a learning experience. You’ve all heard the saying “if I learn one thing each day then it was a good day.” If you open yourself up to making each an every day a learning experience you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn.
Too often we are to busy rushing through our day trying to accomplish everything we need to do, that we just don’t have time to think about learning. But you don’t have to think about it. If you set your mind to it and decide that learning a new thing each day will be part of your daily routine then it will just happen.
And each of us has a duty to help it happen. If each of us decides that we will just take 5 minutes out of each of our days to help someone else, to teach them how to do something, or give them a hand so they can do it themselves next time then you will have done your part.
So the next time someone asks you for help take the time to give them a hand, help guide them and teach them something new. Young or old we can all contribute both by being a student and being an educator. The world will be a better place for it!
